Geopolitical tensions are accelerating investments in naval capabilities, unmanned systems and the protection of critical infrastructure. Against this backdrop, MS&D – International Conference & Expo on Maritime Security & Defence will bring together decision-makers from politics, navies and industry in Hamburg on 3–4 September. Maritime security is increasingly seen as a strategic factor for the resilience and competitiveness of shipping, ports and global supply chains.
“Maritime security and defence is now a shared responsibility of politics, navies and industry,” said Rear Admiral (ret.) Karsten Schneider, President of the German Maritime Institute and Programme Director of the MS&D Conference. He emphasised the importance of industrial capacity, procurement systems and technological innovation.
The conference programme focuses on major challenges including Europe’s maritime capabilities, hybrid threats, critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, underwater technologies and unmanned systems. Speakers include representatives from European institutions, navies and the shipping sector.
Topics will range from the security of trade routes and modern naval warfare to emerging technologies and geopolitical risks affecting global shipping. Cybersecurity and the safety of seafarers operating in high-risk areas will also be key themes.
The event will conclude with discussions on manned and unmanned systems and cooperation between industry and navies. According to Schneider, dual-use technologies for both civilian and military purposes are making maritime security and defence an increasingly important growth area.
MS&D Conference will take place on 3–4 September as part of SMM 2026 in Hamburg, alongside the MS&D Expo showcasing technologies and solutions for maritime security and defence.
