SMM 2026: Security becomes the dominant issue for the maritime industry

SMM 2026 in Hamburg highlighted a changing set of priorities for the maritime industry. While decarbonisation and energy efficiency remain strategic goals, maritime security, resilience and faster deployment of existing technologies increasingly shaped the agenda. More than 50,000 participants from 134 countries attended the four-day event, with around 2,300 exhibitors from 66 countries.

Security and resilience move centre stage

Security was particularly prominent at the new Naval Hall, where the MS&D Conference & Expo and Naval Stage brought together navies, defence companies and maritime technology providers. Discussions focused on unmanned systems, sensors, cybersecurity and the protection of critical maritime infrastructure. Speakers emphasised the need to shorten procurement processes and bring proven technologies into operational use more quickly.

Decarbonisation remained a major industry challenge, but the focus increasingly shifted towards solutions that can deliver immediate efficiency gains. At the Energy Efficiency Hub, companies presented technologies ranging from wind propulsion and alternative propulsion systems to solutions for optimising existing fleets. The Global Maritime Environmental Congress also addressed climate-neutral shipping and the potential of Green Shipping Corridors.

AI moves towards practical applications

Artificial intelligence and digitalisation were another key theme. Discussions moved beyond the general potential of AI towards practical applications such as fleet optimisation, predictive maintenance, collision avoidance and AI-supported navigation. At the same time, questions around safety, certification, liability and the traceability of AI-based decisions remain important.

SMM also underlined the importance of international cooperation and face-to-face business. National pavilions and delegations from around 30 countries, including first-time participants India, Cyprus and Brazil, demonstrated the event’s global reach. Exhibitors reported strong engagement, new contacts and continued willingness to invest despite geopolitical and regulatory uncertainty.

The overall message from SMM 2026 was that the maritime industry is continuing to invest and innovate, but increasingly expects technologies that are already available to be implemented faster. The next SMM will take place in Hamburg from 5 to 8 September 2028.
