Tallink to charter cruise ferry Romantika to Italy

AS Tallink Grupp and the Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games of Taranto 2026 reached a charter agreement for the cruise ferry Romantika. The ship will head to Italy, where she will provide accommodations and catering for the participants of the XX Mediterranean Games. Romantika will be chartered out with a technical and service crew.

Romantika, which sailed as an additional ship on the Tallinn-Stockholm route this summer, had her last trip on the Baltic Sea on August 4, when a special summer evening cruise featuring the band SADU will take place in Tallinn Bay. Those passengers who have booked a trip on Romantika for later dates may choose an alternative travel option between Tallinn and Stockholm on the Baltic Queen, Silja Symphony, or Silja Serenade. Tallink has contacted passengers directly and most of the bookings have already been rebooked.

“Our aim is to use our vessels in the best possible way, and chartering Romantika to Italy will positively impact Tallink’s financial results,” commented Peep Jalakas, Chairman of the Management Board of Tallink Grupp. “The additional summer departures on the Tallinn-Stockholm route and the special cruises in Tallinn Bay were originally planned to run until August 8, with the final departure from Stockholm to Tallinn. Following the agreement to charter Romantika to Italy, the project will now end on August 4, four days earlier than initially planned,” Jalakas added. He confirmed that thanks to Tallink’s flexible route schedule, customers can choose from several alternative departures.

Romantika, built in Finland in 2002, was the first ferry commissioned by Tallink and the first built for an Estonian shipowner. The ship has previously sailed on the Baltic Sea on the Helsinki, Stockholm, and Riga routes. Last year, she was chartered to Algeria.

Three of Tallink’s vessels are involved in long-term charter contracts in Europe. The cruise ships Silja Europa and Galaxy are chartered in the Netherlands, where they provide accommodations. Superfast IX, renamed St. Patrick, is chartered out to the shipping company Hibernia Line to operate the ferry route between Ireland and France.
